Sick Again

Esme was sick about 2 weeks ago - it lasted a week and then she got better but by then I got sick.  Well my sickness which included the pink eye lasted a week and finally when I was starting to feel better yesterday, then Esme got sick again.  Her lungs and ears are still clear but she's full of snot and been coughing a lot.  There's a few eczema patches on both her cheeks that keep flaring up too.  We're running the humidifier in her room at night to help with the cough and so far that seems to be working.  Hopefully she'll get better by this weekend for her adventure to Utah with mom and dad.

Happy Thanksgiving

Esme will miss out on Thanksgiving dinner since she'll be fast asleep by then but we'll be sure to save her some leftovers for tomorrow.  She did get some fresh sweet potatoes this afternoon but wasn't too thrilled about that.  She was much more interested in my ochazuke (Japanese rice soup) and had many spoonfuls.

Daycare is closed the rest of the week so Esme will be home with us.  Ms Faye said that Esme is a favorite among the older kids (2-5 year olds) and on Tuesdays when she's not there, they always ask about her and can't wait till she comes back on Wednesday.  We think she really enjoys having all the other kids around so she ends up eating better there but she also takes less naps.  At home she'll take at least 3 naps a day and still sleep 12-13 hours at night.

Winter Colds

Esme's had a cold for about a week now.  It started out as just a little runny nose but now she has lots of congestion and a wet sounding cough.  Every morning I listen to her lungs and look in her ears and they're still clear.  Taking her in the shower, using the humidifier at night, and saline spray in her nose seems to help and hopefully it goes away by the end of this week.  In the process she's managed to give me pink eye which I've never had despite working in pediatrics for the past 6 years.  Thank goodness for sample antibiotic drops that we have at my workplace!

Ms. Faye says that Esme is such a great eater that she wishes all the babies could eat like her.  I told her she must have Esme confused with another child cause that's not how she eats at home.  We're thinking that she does better with all the other kids around and at home she's just not as interested.  She seems to be enjoying actual solids now like rotisserie chicken, toast, garbanzo beans, pineapple, strawberries, mashed potatoes, and cream of wheat.

Nine Months Old

Esme's 3/4th's a year old! She had her physical today and was right on target - babbling, clapping, waving, pulling up, crawling, picking things up with her thumb and forefinger, etc. She weighed 19 pounds = 50th percentile for weight, and 28 inches long = 65th percentile for length. She also got her flu shot and so I decided to get mines at the same time. She barely made a fuss while getting the shot and then she was done. Then this afternoon she got to enjoy some string cheese for the first time and she gobbled it up.

Whistle While You.....Play

Emse's latest trick is whistling!  She makes her lips into an "o" when she gets excited about something and then she breathes in and out and whistles.  Then she just gets more excited.  It's pretty cute but we haven't been able to catch it on video yet.  She's officially pulling up now and we've realized that we don't have many places where she can do that in our house.  She still manages to get everywhere with her army crawl.  Sometimes she rocks on all fours or gets up like a little crab but goes nowhere.  We still need to put baby gates on our staircase and then we should be safe for awhile more.  Esme's been enjoying trying all the squashes and pumpkins that are in season now.  She's also ventured into yogurt, applesauce, Cheerios, and then tomorrow is egg yolks (no whites until 1 year).

Daylight Savings Time

Amazingly Esme woke up at her normal time, 6am, this morning even though we turned the clocks back an hour before going to bed last night.  I was a little worried she'd wake up an hour earlier and wasn't looking forward to that on a Sunday morning :)  We kept her up later than normal the night before so that might have helped.

Playing With Food

Esme's finding all new places to explore in the house now that she's so mobile.  She loves to hurry over to the pantry when we accidentally leave the doors open and then she finds some cans to roll around the floor with her.  She's still trying to pull up on things and sometimes gets in the position to crab crawl (or something similar to a downward dog yoga pose) but then goes nowhere.  We lowered her crib mattress but she has yet to pull up in her crib that we've seen.  She's still enjoying her voice and seeing how loud it can go, especially when there's something loud to compete with like the washer, the running bath water, etc.

We're gonna try tofu and purple sweet potatoes for lunch today.  She's seeming more interested in the foods that Allen and I are eating and she actually pulls the spoon to her mouth now.  Before she just wanted to play with it.  Her 9 month well child visit is coming up soon so it'll be interesting to see how well she's growing.
